[INTRODUCTION by Jason]

Michael Everett wanted an IGM that could run RHPs like LORD runs
IGMs, so here it is.
------------------------------------------------------------

[FILE LIST] Files that should be in GATE13.ZIP:

  FILE_ID.DIZ   : BBS Description File. (Gateway.diz)
  GATEWAY.TXT   : You're reading it!
  GW-WHATS.TXT  : Revisions/what's new in this version.
                  (Previously known as whatsnew.txt.)
  GateCode.txt : Info on how to program your own random happenings!
                  (Previously known as codes.txt.)

  RHPTRICK.TXT : Tips and tricks for RHP programming.
 *POOL.RHP      : A Random Happening Program:
                  The Prehistoric Pool v1.12 - RHP Script.
 *GATEWAY.EXE   : The Gateway!

 *GWSETUP.EXE : Setup program for The Gateway IGM.
                  Effective 10/15/2004, the IGM now uses GWSETUP.EXE.

  HOMEPAGE.URL  : Internet Shortcut to Jason Brown's web-page,
                  and to my Castle Camelot LORD Links Page.
  ------------
  CCL-APPS.TXT : Info on Castle Camelot LORD Apps.
  CCL-PROJ.TXT : Summer 2005 LORD projects info file.

  See:  http://www.fidotel.com/public/camelot/ccl-apps.txt
  ------------------------------------------------------------

  GW13-REV.TXT:  Contains miscellaneous documentation notes
                 that have been moved out of GATEWAY.TXT.

  Note: This IGM does not have an ANSI file. If someone would
  like to make one for the IGM, both Jason and I would prefer
  something that glowed and looked something like the Stargate
  (from the TV show/movie.} Donald. 11/18/2004.
  -------------------------------------------------------------

  Files that are made by The Gateway in its directory:

 *GATEWAY.DAT   : Player record file.
 *GATETIME.DAT  : Time keeping file.
 *GATEWAY.CFG   : Configuration file.

 *GW-EXTRA.CFG : Extra config file, see [EXTRA SETUP INFO].
                  Effective 10/15/2004, the IGM now uses GW-EXTRA.CFG.

  GATE-USE.TXT : IGM Usage Reports disk file. Added 01/28/2005.
                  Viewable using GWSETUP.EXE main menu option V.

**GATE-CFG.DAT : Temporary copy of Gateway.cfg used by IGM during
                  IGM initialization process. Is automatically deleted
                  during IGM exit process. Usage added 03/08/2005.

  LORD data file accessed by IGM, in LORD directory:
  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  3RDPARTY.DAT : Tells LORD what IGMs are installed in the game.
                  Is modified when the IGM is installed or un-installed.

  LOGNOW.TXT : LORD's Daily Happenings file. Updated during normal
                  IGM usage by various events, or during LCSETUP.EXE usage.

  ERROR.LOG : Contains any Error code message data written by this IGM,
                  when a Runtime Error event occurs, that causes the IGM
                  to not work properly and/or crash. Reverted from use
                  of GW-ERROR.LOG file to ERROR.LOG on 05-02-2005.

  * = Needed for program to run.

  BTW: GWSETUP isn't really needed. It's just nice to keep around. <G>

  However, without it, you can't install new RHP Scripts, or remove
  ones you don't wish to use any more.

  As of 10/15/04, the IGM now uses GWSETUP.exe and GW-Extra.cfg files.
  Primary reason is so that the IGM may be used in the same directory,
  without filename conflict, with other IGMs.

  The Gateway v1.3 can be used from the same directory as L.O.R.D.
  Cavern v1.7, The Forest Outhouse v2.50, and Outlands Tavern
  v1.6. Each of the four RHP-based IGMs are configured/designed
  to only work with RHP scripts designed for a specific IGM.

  Neither IGM will try to access data files designed for a
  different IGM. Usage of a separate directory for each of these
  four IGMs is advisable, but is not required.
------------------------------------------------------------

Accessing the Usage Reports file:  {02/06/2005}
===============================================
As of Feb. 06, 2005, you may now directly access/view the Usage
Reports file by using GWSETUP REPORT command from the DOS prompt.

That bypasses the normal main menu processing that is not needed
if you are just wishing to update and view the usage reports.

One requirement: You have to have a player database file in
order to view/create/update the IGM Usage Reports file.
================================================================

         [REQUIREMENTS]

LORD version 3.25 or greater.
DOS (version 3.1 or better) or compatible operating system.
SHARE installed for multinode systems.
A Modem! 300-115,200 baud and any fossil lock baud rate up to 115,200.
  (Works well on telnet, too!)
286 or better processor (should not be a problem...)
Memory! Very little needed to run... never actually bothered
to find out.
----------------------------------------

** Note 1: Share.exe is not required for usage on systems using
Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000/NT, Windows ME, Windows XP,
or non-Microsoft O.S.'s such as OS/2 or Linux. At least for Local
Mode play. It may still be needed for multi-node usage of the IGM.

** Note 2: IGM verified to work without problems under Windows ME.
	Running either LORD v4.06 or LORD v4.07 beta (January-September 2002
	compilations). **

*** Note 3: IGM was fully tested using Pentium III and IV CPUs.

*** Note 4: IGM was developed using MS Windows Millenum Edition and
         MS Windows XP. All personal testing was done using various
         compilations of LORD v4.07 beta, through late May 2005.
------------------------------------------------------------

         { IGM USAGE WARNINGS:  01/21/2005 }

This MAY be obvious to most users of the IGM, who are usually BBS sysops.

But under NO circumstance should you ever run the IGM with the following
IGM data files write-protected. Doing so will probably cause the IGM to
crash. So do NOT EVER fool around during IGM operation with these files:

GateTime.Dat, Gateway.Cfg, GW-Extra.cfg, and Gateway.dat.

You should NEVER attempt to edit an RHP Script file while the IGM is running
running in LORD, since that could crash the IGM to crash. Or at the least,
it might cause the RHP script to stop working correctly afterwards.

Exception: Limited editing may be done of the Gateway.cfg and GW-extra.cfg
files manually, but should never be done while the IGM is in use in LORD.
Primarily, if you need to alter those two files, please do so using LCSETUP.EXE.

Regarding RHP Scripts, if one does not work properly for you, contact the
script file's author for technical support. Such support for Jason Brown's
scripts is handled by me. Donald Tidmore -- gtidmore@hiwaay.net -- Email.

         Data Files Corruption:  01/21/2005
         ==================================
Occasionally, especially if you are using a LORD IGM that is in beta development,
some situation might arise when you can tell that the IGM has corrupted its
data files.  What to do?

While the IGM is NOT in use, you can delete one or both of the files -- GateTime.dat
and Gateway.dat -- and they will be recreated automatically the next time the IGM
is run in LORD. If that does not clear up problems you have with the IGM, then
contact me for technical support. In general, if there is a problem with the
two CFG files, that can be fixed easily using GWSETUP.EXE. Donald.
============================================================================

Updating existing IGM installation to v1.3:
--------------------------------------------
    Unless you have been using beta versions released after
    February 2005, EVERYONE is required to delete their old
    GATEWAY.DAT player database file before using v1.3.

    This IGM's player database structure was revised in January
    and February 2005. Old gateway.dat files are incompatible
    with the new IGM.

    Update process summary:
      1) unzip ALL files from GATE13.ZIP using over-write mode
         to the Gateway IGM directory.
      2) Delete your existing GATEWAY.DAT file.
      3) Run GWSETUP.EXE and follow the prompts as usual.
      4) Resume using IGM as you normally do in LORD.

    If you have an old SETUP.EXE file, delete it manually.
    ============================================================

============================== 12/03/04 Update: ==============================
GWSETUP assumes that it is being run from the IGM directory you are installing
the IGM from. It displays that path info on-screen as menu line (5). If the
path is incorrect, you have to change it to a valid path at this time. This
is MANDATORY, so that the program writes/reads data files from the CORRECT
IGM directory location.

Example: You unzipped GATE13.ZIP into a temporary directory called TEMP in
your LORD directory. You plan to install the IGM using an GATEWAY Directory
below the LORD directory. LORD is in c:\internet\lord, using my personal setup
info. So the IGM assumes you are installing to C:\internet\lord\gateway by
default.

"Path to IGM's Directory" on-screen will show C:\INTERNET\LORD\TEMP
You will need to change that to read: C:\INTERNET\LORD\GATEWAY
-- substituting the directory path info that YOU intend to use.  {end - 12/03/04 note }
===================================================

Once configuration is done, do Extra Config process. This is where you
tell the Gateway, how many RHP scripts it will be running. At this time,
all publicly released RHPs for the Gateway come either with the IGM -
The Prehistoric Pool, or are by Gary Hartzell. Those are distributed
either from his web-site, http://www.hartzell.us/lord/, or from the
Castle Camelot web-site - see http://www.fidotel.com/public/camelot/camelot6.htm
web-page.

4) Once you have done Extra Setup, save the data, and return to the main
Setup program menu. Choose Install IGM and follow on-screen instructions.
If using LordMenu utility, at this time, update its data files - 3rdalt.txt, etc.

5) ** IMPORTANT **. The IGM's player database structure was updated on Jan. 28, 2005.
If you have used the IGM previously on the day you start using a post-01/28/05 beta
verison, then it is mandatory that you delete your existing gateway.dat file before
you try to re-use the IGM from LORD. Otherwise, you will have an RTE 100 which
will send you back to LORD's Other Places menu, when the IGM tries to access
an old gateway.dat with an incompatible file structure.  {01/30/05 note}

That concludes the upgrade process. While using this beta, you are asked
to send in feedback to me as to whether it works OK remotely and in local mode.
=======================================================================

All old references to SETUP.EXE now refer to GWSETUP.EXE. All prior
versions of the IGM, including 1.2, used Setup.exe.
=====================================================================

All RHP scripts used with The Gateway IGM have to be located in
the same directory the IGM is installed into.

Script authors who use @DEFENSE@, @SKILLUSE@, etc., codes from this
update are reminded that they must use @VERSION@ 1.1 in their scripts.

Usage in RHP Scripts of @SCRIPTVERSION@ code should work with all
IGM versions. It is a comment variable that is not executed by the
program, so it is backward-compatible with all earlier versions.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

         [INSTALLATION]

Put the files in the zip in a directory off of your LORD directory.
May I suggest naming the directory "GATEWAY"? Then run GWSETUP.
Press 'C' to configure first. Then press 'S' to configure EXTRA.CFG.

This is so you can add RHP programs (see [EXTRA SETUP INFO]). You
also use it to change/set the number of Searches per day. The rest
shouldn't be too hard to figure out. Just answer all the questions.

(The Gateway is Freeware, but please register anyway so I will know
who is using my LORD IGM.)

Installing (pressing 'I' after leaving the configure menu) will put
the run lines into 3RDPARTY.DAT, and an announcement that The Gateway
has been installed in the daily happenings. For those of you who want
to edit GATEWAY.CFG yourself, here's a listing of it:

         GATEWAY.CFG Listing:
         ===============================
         C:\INTERNET\LORD\
         BBS Name
         Sysop's First Name
         Sysop's Last Name
         Sysop Handle (your LORD character's name)

Line 1: Path to LORD with trailing backslash (the \ key).
Line 2: Your BBS name (or Telnet web-site name)
Line 3: Your real first name
Line 4: Your real last name
Line 5: Your handle (optional). Displayed at start up instead of
        your real name, can include LORD codes.

The LORD path must be on the first line, and no comments are allowed
unless they are after the sysop handle line.

As of 01/28/2005, the IGM no longer has an Registration code line.
Gateway.cfg is designed to have ONLY 5 lines.

------------------------------------------------------
You'll notice that Jason said it'll use non-standard COM ports in
the File_id.Diz, but there's not a configuration setting for that.

That's because it gets all that stuff from LORD's Node*.Dat file.
As long as LORD is set up right, this will be set up right in that
respect. I wish more IGMs used that Node*.Dat, too...
-------------------------------------------------------

These are the lines put in 3RDPARTY.DAT by The Gateway:

<path to gateway>\GATEWAY.EXE *
`@T`4he `@G`4ateway `0v1.3

During installation, the user is asked if they wish to include
the version data in the IGM entry line or not.
============================================

The LORD color codes used in The Gateway are Jason Brown's
preference. You may change the color codes used in 3rdparty.dat
however to your preferences. Color codes used in the IGM's
OUT data files may NOT be altered by the end-user.
------------------------------------------------------------

This IGM does its own maintenance each day, and does not make
any change to your LORD game's MAINT.BAT file.
=================================================================

Special Notes: The Gateway will work fine in an IGMs directory
with other IGMs, *AS LONG* as the others do NOT use an GWSETUP.exe
or GW-Extra.cfg file. They also can't use the Gatetime.dat, Gateway.cfg,
or Gateway.dat file names. That is mandatory with NO exceptions.

Starting in late 2003, The LORD Cavern, The Forest Outhouse, and The
Outlands Tavern IGMs could be used in the same directory as each other.

The Gateway can be in the same directory with them, providing the
version in use of each IGM, does not conflict with another IGM.

Example: If you use Gateway 1.2 and Lord Cavern 1.5, they can NOT
be in the same directory. Both use SETUP.EXE files and both used
EXTRA.CFG files. Therefore one IGM would overwrite files needed
by the other IGM.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

         [EXTRA SETUP INFO]

Please only use GWSETUP to add RHPs. There's a special format that
the lines need to be in. It's much easier using GWSETUP anyway, because
it automatically finds all RHPs in your Gateway directory that are for
the Gateway, and then lets you add only those ones. :) It's option 'E'
under the main menu.

In other words, do NOT manually edit the IGM's GW-EXTRA.CFG file. Doing
so might cause the IGM to stop working properly.
------------------------------------------------------------

         [UN-INSTALLING]

Note: To reset The Gateway, run GWSETUP.EXE and press 'R',
on the Main Menu, and then press the ENTER key.

Now why would you want to un-install <G>? Well, run GWSETUP, press
'U'. Unless it's in an IGM extender's files. Then use the expander
to uninstall The Gateway. IGME is great with that... Wait! I
mentioned something not written by me! Oh, no! Seriously, it's a
great program. Look in to it...

(Usage of IGME and similar programs pretty much stopped after LORD
started allowing a large number of IGMs to be installed. Currently,
there are NO igm expander programs which are supported at any rate.
Authors of such programs all have disappeared over the years.)

==================================================
Provided the user is running LORD v3.50 - v4.00a - by Seth Robinson;
or v4.02 - v4.07 - by Michael Preslar; LORD will automatically handle
as many IGMs as you wish to install. However, unless you are using
the LordMenu utility, any IGMs installed over 24 will result in user
having the Other Places menu scroll upward until the command prompt
appears. Use of LordMenu v1.30 - by Lloyd Hannesson - allows you to
list installed IGMs in a two columns per line menu.

--   http://www.dasme.org/techn/files/lrdmnu13.zip (LordMenu v1.30)

Alternate URL: http://www.filegate.net/camelot/lordfile/lrdmnu13.zip
-----------------------------------------------------------------

         [USING IT]

Just select The Gateway in the other places. It will do maintenance
automatically when the first person for the day enters, and it doesn't
take that long. A menu will be brought up showing the installed RHPs,
just use the keys shown.

Example. (A) The Prehistoric Pool. To run the RHP adventure, you
press A on your keyboard and the ENTER key. Then when you are returned,
if alive, to the IGM, you can select another IGM using a different menu
code letter. Or you can press * (for Quit) and return to LORD.
------------------------------------------------------------

         [REGISTRATION]

None, this program is freeware! However, please notify me that
you are using it. I like to know who is running my IGMs. Jason.

If you wish to exchange registrations for your own LORD IGMs, that
would be fine with me. However, all of my personal IGMs are
Freeware, so they don't require registration at all. But like Jason,
I do appreciate being told who is using my IGMs, or my LPEdit
player editor utility. Which was created by my teacher Charlie
Wardick, and completed by myself with Charlie's assistance. Donald.
------------------------------------------------------------

         [COMING SOON - JASON - From v1.0 IGM]

As BBS's kind of fizzled out, there's not much in that area. :( I'm
toying with ways to bring more BBS like elements to the web, though.
Also adding an RHP system to The Outlands Tavern, just for fun. :)

As of July 2003, Jason had renewed interest in LORD programming. So
he started making 32-bit versions using C/C++ compiler of the LordStat
and RHPTest utilities. But neither is available except through Jason,
and both are still in beta status as of this IGM's public release date,
on Nov. 07, 2003. Jason lost interest again, and never released anything
new, in late 2003, in 2004, or in January-May 2005 time period. He
is still working now and then on RHPTest/32 and LordStat/32.

------------------ 04/14/2005 Note: ---------------------------
LordStat update is being handled by Jason. April-June 2005.

New version will add ability of user to generate HTML versions
of the normal ASCII and ANSI bulletins.

Stones! v1.2 - A LORD2 IGM by Jason Brown. Support and development was
         taken over in June 2002 by Max Larivee. Contact Max at
         cracktus@hotmail.com with any questions about Stones! v1.20.

-------------------------------------------------------------
    04/09/05: Max has disappeared. So at the current time, NO
    support is available for Stones!, unless Jason provides it.
    I am NOT a LORD II programmer. Donald.

* Current work - Jason: RHPTEST/32 beta. Windows-based RHP Script
  test utility. Written in C/C++. Lordstat/32 beta. Creates HTML
  web-page bulletins on LORD stats.

  June 2005 Note: Jason is still working now and then on RHPTest/32,
  LordStat/32, and LORDStat v1.7a Beta.

  If you are interested, ask him about their status.

  If you are interested, you can obtain RHPTEST/32 beta
  from Jason Brown, which is a C++ Windows GUI program.
---------------------------------------------------------------

Note: My current IGM/utility beta archives, and the archives for
the five RHP Sets, are kept backed up and updated 2-4 times each
month on the http://www.nightfallgames.com/files/ web-site.

Documentation Rewrite Notes: I've worked on this file for the
past three years, adding stuff here and there. So I am well
aware it probably is too big and it definitely is messy. I will
work on a complete rewrite of the documentation files for The
Forest Outhouse, The Gateway, The LORD Cavern, The Outlands
Tavern, and the RHP Toolkit sometime in summer 2005.

1st documentation redesign step is usage of GW13-REV.TXT file.

===============================================================

The Gateway v2.00 Notes:
  Version 2.00: Will apply to the next DOS Lord Version, and
  possibly to the first version of this IGM made for LORD/32 usage.
  However, I may end up using version 1.00 for the Lord/32
  version. I'll decide that sort of details sometime in late
  summer 2005 or at a later time.

  Version 2.00's DOS LORD version of The Gateway will be prepared
  and released either during late Summer or early Fall 2005. It
  will use either A.N.G.E.L or MannDoor tool-kit, instead of DDIGM.
  After this summer, I do not intend to have a single IGM that is
  DDIGM-based.
  ---------------------------------

  In summary, this program may be used with DOS LORD versions and will
  be fully supported.
==========================================================================

IGM was developed using Borland Pascal 7.01 on either a MS Windows
Millenium Edition system or one using MS Windows XP SP2.
