Welcome to the LordNews #6 Condensed Version Page: Castle Camelot LORD Authors Newsletter #6, Condensed Version: Volume 2, Issue 2-B -- Started May 02, 2001. Primary HTML Version Released: May 04, 2001. Created by Donald Tidmore - donald.tidmore@usa.net -------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Vista/5389/camelot5.html http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Vista/5389/ccigm-6.html http://www.geocities.com/donaldtidmore/Lordnews/CCIGM-06.TXT http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Vista/5389/ccigm6-c.html http://www.geocities.com/donaldtidmore/Lordnews/CCIGM06U.TXT -------------------------------------------------------------------- LordNews #6 Update Introduction: One of my Lord friends asked me to consider doing a condensed version of the newsletter's issue #6, since he found it hard to read, which is understandable. I've not been trying to limit the amount of information an author provides me very much. So I'm going to try making a condensed version of LordNews #6 for him, and anyone else who finds it useful. Issue #6's coverage period, which applies to this Condensed Version update, is for January-April 2001. LordNews Issue #6 was released on April 16-17, 2001, and this "addendum" page was used to supplement it with information obtained during the remainder of April 2001. This file's wording will differ from that of the LordNews Issue #6 C.V. Page, in places, since its being created three months after the web-page was. Some sections are skipped so if you wish to read them, see the web-page. ------------------------------------------------------------ Introduction: This is a condensed version of LordNews Issue #6, which like the other issues, is devoted to covering news and events regarding the BBS door games LORD (Legend of the Red Dragon), and its sequels, LORD II, and Wildcat Tournament LORD. Due to the fact that no development existed for over a year regarding the Worldgroup version of T-Lord, it is not covered. Also covered is anything news-worthy regarding the Planets: TEOS BBS door game. Each issue is divided into sections, starting with the Introduction. Followed by a Miscellaneous Notes section (in some issues), the LORD Programming Situation section, LORD Authors entries section - sub-divided into Active and Inactive parts, Recent LORD Releases section, the LordNews Issues Links Section, and the Summary/Contributions section. Post-release update sections follow that one, when an issue has been updated after its official release. Issue #6 covered four months. I am rewriting some paragraphs from scratch, and others will be listed here in a condensed format. Distribution Notes: The newsletter is primarily distributed through my web-site. Copies of the archive files for each issues are distributed to the Fidonet Lord echo courtesy of friends. Until August 06, 2001, each issue, when officially released, was released in a Text Version through my Listbot LordNews mailing list. Future issues, starting with Issue #8, will be distributed using the new LordNews mailing list, hosted at the Lord Legacy (http://lord.lordlegacy.org) web-site. All newsletter issue files are kept up-to-date on my web-site. The file ccigm-6p.zip was distributed for this issue, containing the graphics files it (Issue #6) used. The dragon graphic, drag-070.jpg, used in Issue #6 came from the Dragon Archives public archive site, which has closed down. The dragon graphic, drag-038.jpg, put into use on the LordNews #6 C.V. Page, also came from there. Official Release Notes: Note that unless noted otherwise, dates are for year 2001. 04/17: LordNews Issue #6 text version (CCIGM-06.TXT) was released via Listbot. It was created after the LordNews Issue #5 update was finished. The text version files are all stored in the Lordnews directory on my web-site. Issue #6 text version was distributed through the Listbot LordNews list in three parts on Tuesday morning, finishing up at 12:30 am. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Newsletter/Web-site Updates: Miscellaneous Notes Section: Old Issues Rewrite Notes (summarized): As part of the overall update I did of all previous newsletter issues, all of the issue files have been updated. I moved all of the CCIGM-xx.TXT/ZIP files into the Lordnews subdirectory on my site, so all of the issue's links needed to be updated accordingly. People will change email addresses, change web-site addresses, or their status (active/inactive) changes. So each issue is updated accordingly every few months. I started updating Issues #1-#5 on March 27, 2001, and completed the updates on April 16. Where possible, I aligned the HTML and Text version files for each issue to match each other. Anyone wishing to link to my Lord Links Page may use lordlink.jpg for a graphics link, if they wish to use one. LORD IGMs search: I am still looking for The Jeweler's Shoppe, Market Place, Milo's Market, and Old Skill Center. Should anyone have them, please send them to me. Listbot Notes paragraph: Skipped, not worth condensing. Post-release notes paragraph: Issue #6's main updates were done in May 2001, in connection with the release of the LordNews #6 C.V. update page. Email/web-site addresses were added to LordNews #6 Text version on August 09, 2001, along with brief update notations, where needed. LordNews Form Page notes: not included here. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LORD Sites Openings/Closures: "Dead Site" entry updates - Sites which had not been updated in the past 6+ months. They were skipped in this issue, unless their status changed. Moved/Reopened sites: The Lord Domain site, Sweet Dreams Software, Blackfist Lord, LORD Fan-Fiction Center, Shining Star Software, WT-Lord Webring page, and Mad Systems site. Recently discovered sites: Blackhand Productions (now closed), Demonic Productions, Dore's Lord IGMs page, [SYS] Lord site, and the Wonderland Software files page. Some valuable LORD sites were discovered in March: The Goldengate ddsdoor FTP directory - ftp://bbs.goldengate.net/ddsdoors/; Shannon Talley's Fidotel LORD site - http://www.fidotel.com/public/lord/, and telnet://telnet.fidotel.com; and two WT-LORD cheat pages, located on Shannon's site, and on the Acad's World site. http://www.acad.dynip.com/public/igmhints.htm - by Chuck Brogan. http://www.fidotel.com/public/lord/cheat1.htm - by Shannon Talley. Page, for WT-Lord. Shannon Talley
Site closures: The LORD Domain Ring homepage and Red Dragon's Lair, owned by Colby Reich. And Sunshine's IGMs, by Becky Benjamin. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The LORD Programming Situation: Used for information from/regarding my friends Joel Gathercole, Michael Preslar, and Bobby Queen. For full text of each person's entry, read either CCIGM-06.TXT or ccigm-6.html please. -------------------------------------------------- Joel Gathercole: greenie@darktech.org -OR- greenie_23@yahoo.com Lord2: Complete New World: http://lord2.greenmachinebbs.com/lord2 Lord2 Projects Page: http://lord2.greenmachinebbs.com/lord2/l2igms.htm Cnwfiles directory: http://lord2.greenmachinebbs.com/lord2/cnwfiles Lord2 Mailing List Polls: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/lord2/polls telnet://greenmachinebbs.com -- ICQ #16277704 -------------------------------------------------- LORD2: CNW 136.1 was released on December 29, 2000. CNW 136.2 and 136.3 updates released before/around February 16. Updates of Refhelp.doc and Rules.ref files, needed by the Lord2 authors, were released on February 18. Joel is gradually redoing all unsupported Lord2 igms, and will re-release them as they are completed. Those with Lord2:CNW games can check - http://greenmachinebbs.com/lord2/cnwfiles - to find individual updates to CNW, which are posted each night. Joel's Pouch of Documents IGM was released on February 23. CNW 137.0 released on March 17 - http://greenmachinebbs.com/lord2/files/cnw-1370.zip. Version 3.0 updates of Voodoo Temple and Xena's House igms released on March 21. Downloadable from my LORD II IGMs Page. New IGMs added to CNW include the Auction House. Also considerable work has been done on NPC characters, and being able to sell deeds. CNW 137.1 was released March 21. 137.2 update was planned, but Joel decided to work on CNW 138.0 instead, which is nearly completed. Question: Joel, would you please clarify for me, when a Lord2 program should be called an IGM, and when it can be termed a utility? Answer: IGMs: In Game Modules are programs/new stuff added to the game itself, where players would see the changes or something like that. An actual MODULE, which builds up things. UTILITIES: well things that only the SYSOP/webmaster can use to make changes to like the player info files, or programming guides, can be utilities. Mostly stuff to do with programming the IGMs would be utilities. There are polls available on the Lord2 Mailing List site that people are invited to participate in. One Joel has done for me, to determine what the most popular Lord2 IGMs are. Go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/lord2 and join the mailing list. Then you will be able to read messages and participate in the polls. One recently added set of polls relates to the LORD movie. Work on a script is underway currently. Joel would appreciate help from the other Lord2 authors with two things: (1) doing IGM reviews for listing on the Lord2 Projects Page - http://greenmachinebbs.com/lord2/l2igms.htm. And (2) rewriting the unsupported IGMs to fix bugs, conflicts with other IGMs and the Lord2 program, and other needed updates. Reminder to those authors: If you're not planning on working on your Lord2 programs any more, consider transferring them over to Joel, so they can be supported and developed further. Those who are not members of the Lord2 mailing list should read joel0429.txt, which I have just added to ccigm-6h.zip and ccigm6hc.zip. It is information on the upcoming release of CNW v138.0. ============================================================ Notes: For those who are wondering, CNW v138.0 has not been released yet, as of August 10, 2001. If you want to know why, ask Joel. Some parts of Michael's entry have been put here intact, others are omitted or summarized. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Michael Preslar: e_maus@covingtononline.com -OR- mpreslar@mailcity.com LORD Legacy web-site: http://lord.lordlegacy.org/ LORD Legacy FTP site ftp://ftp.lordlegacy.org LORD Legacy News Page: http://lord.lordlegacy.org/news.html IRC: irc.lordlegacy.org -- Elysium Software: http://www.elysoft.org/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Brandon Pierce - No current email address known -------------------------------------------------- January 2001 info: Telnet BBS: telnet://bbs.lordlegacy.org now available. Work is being done on updating Joseph Masters' Lord programs - LordNet, TeamLord, Aragorn's Timer, Lord Cops, Lord Event, NPCLord, Sandtiger's Bar, etc. Of those, Lord Cops and NPCLord were updated by Elysium Software. Michael received permission from Gameport to port LORD to OS/2, Linux, and Windows 32-bit. Permission was given again to work on updating LORD II and Planets: TEOS. This happened in part thanks to all of us who signed the LORD petition last year. Until he left, Brandon Pierce ran the Lord Legacy web-site for Michael. Wherever you are, Brandon, best wishes to you. February 2001 info: LORD v4.06, LORD II v1.02, and Planets: TEOS v2.02 were released on Feb. 05. What's new with them? That "give the hag a gem" thing is gone from Lord (my if/then code for Lady was a bit too greedy). I'm still working on finding out why it cuts off the beginnings of text sometimes ... In Lord II ... cosmetic changes noting the new owners. The L2.exe and L2CFG.exe files no longer need to be patched for fast machines. The smackrod won't let you teleport onto something solid anymore. In TEOS.. Nothing spectacular .. (the) Planets.exe/.ovr and plancfg.exe (files) no longer need to be patched for fast machines .. and I've started cleaning up the code. ... I'm working on a new L2CFG (finished the player editor this morning). Want to rework PLANCFG. And otherwise, I want to clean the code up. ... Michael. 02/15/01 Email: Question: I was wondering if you knew yet if the 32-bit version of Lord will be able to run all the old IGMs and other support files. Answer: Here's Mike's answer about Win32 LORD running IGM's: I'm going to say yes, with one condition.. that the game is run on a normal fossil or async connection. If they want to make use of the door32 standard (AKA Windows handles instead of fossil or async), the sysop would need upgraded IGMs. Brandon. March Info, summarized: 03/22 L. L. News: ... I've been given permission port Lord, Lord2 and TEOS to Win32, OS/2, and Linux. There is a possibility of Palm and Win/CE versions of these games as well. Web versions? A high possibility.. Matter of fact, a friend is working on WebLord as we speak. Recently, I've been working on Lord/X (the Linux version).. Donald Tidmore asked why I was working on the Linux version before anything else.. The answer.. The 16-bit version of the game will run on Win32 and OS/2 systems easily. With a little tweaking of DOSEMU, it can run on Linux systems as well. I'm working on the Linux port first so that Linux users won't have to mess with DOSEMU. The Linux port will also speed up Palm and Win/CE development. I'm also hoping that the Linux port will encourage other BBS developers to consider coding for this platform (Remember folks, the more BBS programs out there, the more activity the BBS scene will see..) LORD/X material: I've made sure to not have any limits on the number of players.. Uses stdin, stdout, stderr, so crafty shell scripters, Perl coders, tcl coders, etc should easily be able to redirect the game to whatever they like.. One guy I was talking to in IRC said he could possibly make an MIRC script to run the game over IRC.. Wouldn't that be weird? I'm also making sure that all ports are compatible with one another.. Meaning, you could run a BBS with Lord on it, and a web server with WebLord on it.. Both on the same machine.. They could share data files, and thus share players.. Giving players a higher chance of game activity. Let's hope this works out.. Why am I working on all of these ports? Am I abandoning the BBS game? No way.. I'm not abandoning it in anyway. I just want to get more people playing these games. Lord has long been a staple to the BBS community. With these newer forms of "people interaction", a game like Lord is needed to encourage people to have a good time with their hobbies. Notes: Lord/X has not been released as a public beta yet, as of August 10, 2001. Since I did LordNews Issue #6, I've been informed by Seth Robinson that he is into program development for hand-held computers, such as the Palm Pilot. (Summarized) What's the news on the Win32 and OS/2 ports? I've been collecting info on doing those, but haven't started actual coding yet. I had worked on Lord/32 before, and it took me all of 2 weeks to have the port 50% done.. So, I'm expecting these ports to go rather quickly when they get started. Unfortunately, I either deleted that source or lost it during one of the machine upgrades, and will have to start over from scratch with that. (Material regarding WT-LORD and about Brandon leaving Metropolis Gameport is skipped here.) Michael switched jobs, and now works for the West Corporation. The LORD Legacy web-site computers were moved. Michael's servers are on DSL phone lines. His new job has better work hours so he is able to spend more time on personal projects, such as LORD programming. His BBS (bbs.lordlegacy.org) also had to shut down due to the move. I don't know if he put that back up or not. (Material from Brandon from late March skipped here.) 03/28 L. L. News: Screen shots of WebLord posted. It's in development, it works, and runs well. Two pictures available, client-side view and server-side view. ============================================================ ** END OF CCIGM06U.TXT creation so far. The web-site remains inactive, but he did get all the Lord2 IGM review pages uploaded that I revised for him in early March. They fixed fixed problems spotted with the IGM download links. Minor component files on Kiteria's Korner were updated recently - the Lord Links page, and Lord IGMs Page. The Lord Archives page was also updated, but the ccigm file links won't work. I did the update before moving files to the Lordnews directory. I'll eventually get that fixed. Summary of newsletter section: Bobby's email problems were fixed in January. Bobby hasn't finished updating the blockfaq.htm page, that I know of. You can get a more current version from Tien Lung, if you need it. I fixed the Kiteria's Korner Lord Hints page in late January, so it now prints correctly in Netscape Navigator. Bobby's Untested igms page is up-to-date, and some time in the future, Codax Dragon will have the programs listed there all reviewed. Bobby had surgery on March 08, and it was successful. He is home recuperating, and building up strength for another surgery, later this year. And that the number of users is continually growing. Occupied with college, part-time jobs, and girlfriend. Still searching for old/new LORD authors to feature their programs on his Lord page. Recently reported that the author of Lord Life may release an update to fix reported problems. [Red LORD barline] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Inactive LORD Authors Section: I've made a few changes in author status since Issue #6 was officially released. Aaron Wornom, Sweet Dreams Software, is now classified active. I just realized that his Easter Egg Hunt wt-lord igm update was released in January 2001. Since I've had no word from Marty Blankenship in several months, he is now classified Inactive. Marc Ryan is also reclassified inactive. These friends remain on the Full Inactive, or Semi-Inactive lists: Dawn Bidot, Suzanne Franklin, Robert Olsen, "Black Omen", Paul Koukos, Elric, and Bobby Queen. No longer doing Lord/Lord2 programming: Jason Brown, Bryan Turner, Tien Lung, Robert Fogt, Chet Rhodes, and Bryan Stanbridge. I am going to keep listing the Elysium Software site as inactive, until they release new versions or updates of Lord programs. That applies to everyone basically. If you haven't released a Lord program in over six months, you are thought of as inactive, in most cases. I see no value here in listing the "Dead" Lord sites. Just read the main issue to see who that is, if you haven't already done so. The following is a BRIEF summary of the Inactive Authors section entries. Michael Adams - Not developing for LORD anymore, but will provide help for his programs to anyone who needs it. Suggested that a good route for LORD's future is Java/ANSI BBS clients. Michael Bujold - Not currently doing Lord/Lord2 programming. Hasn't updated his programs because (a) he sees nothing wrong with them, and (b) no one has given him feedback on needed changes to them. Robert Fogt - Not doing LORD work, and has indicated he will transfer his programs to Joel Gathercole for their continued support. Is looking for source code to his TEOS programs, to release publicly. Steve Gargolinski - Not doing LORD work, due to lack of good ideas. Bryan Stanbridge - Quit Lord programming last year, and is heavily involved in music work. Did not release updates to anything since no major Y2K-related problems showed up with his Lord programs. Ken Weitzel - Doesn't plan any LORD work at all, except for annual releases of the Christmas (Tis the Season) IGM, proceeds from which go to charities to help children. Joel Gathercole has polls to determine what the most popular Lord II igms are. Please participate. The poll regarding whether to include Lord II: CNW inside LORD II was closed. The final result was 87.50% wanted it left a separate program. I see no real benefit in relisting here my own list of favorite Lord igms. Please send me your list of favorite IGMs, for LORD, LORD II, or Tournament LORD, for usage in LordNews issue #7. Other than fixing mistakes I've noticed in Issue #6, and removing some comments I now feel unwarranted about the Elysium Software group, this web-page, and the update of Issue #6 itself, is the only newsletter work I'm doing. However, if people start sending in information for it, I will start the issue sooner. Regarding the previous issues which were updated in April, I saw no point in resending them to people through the LordNews mailing list. No changes in the old issue's Text files, or in CCIGM-06.TXT, are currently planned. One has to stop somewhere, so I am working only with Issue #6's HTML web-page files. To subscribe to my LordNews mailing list, or re-subscribe if needed due to an email address change, you will find the Listbot code on my LORD Links page, and on LordNews Issue #6. I decided to add it to the latter in early April. I hope someone appreciates it being there. Summary of Update Notes Section, from ccigm-6.html: Mentioned the idptk100.zip file I found on the Goldengate ddsdoors FTP site, my evaluation of the WT-Lord webring's value and status, Sharon Aiken's On Ramp WT-Lord site, and the addition of a Table of Contents to Issue #6. I may go back and add one to the other issue's web-pages. Be nice to know if people would like to have one or not. And only two people to date have given me serious feedback on issue #6. So PLEASE write me and tell me what you thought about it, and about this condensed version page. If you like it, the credit goes to Michael Everett. It's his idea. And if you don't like it, well blame Michael . [Red LORD barline] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Newsletter Summary and Contributions: LORD Newsletters, Issues #1-#5 covered three months each. Issues #6 and forward cover four months each. When needed, an Addendum message is created and distributed for each web-page issue. Issue #6 was started on January 31, 2001, and publicly released via Listbot and my web-site on April 19. Briefly updated in late April, and a primary update, which includes this web-page, is underway now for Issue #6. As hard as one tries, one discovers mistakes they did, and need to fix. And I also wish to apologize specifically to Michael Preslar and the Elysium Software group for anything I have said that upset them. All I can say really, is you all know my email address, and if you want to complain about my newsletter issue comments, try writing me Email, OK? I would much prefer positive feedback, but can take negative feedback. I may not enjoy it, but I will read it. This Condensed Version of LordNews Issue #6 was started on May 02, and was finished on May 04. I use Netscape Navigator v4.77 and Microsoft Internet Explorer, versions 5.01 and v5.50. Created this Condensed version page on May 02-04. This web-page is currently 8 pages long. 07/14: Updated page for printing purposes. 07/22: Moved drag-038.jpg green dragon picture here from LordNews Issue #7's web-page. 08/02 Note: Reprinted pages 1-2 including dragon photo. August 2001 Revamp: Addition of email/web-site addresses to author's entry headers started on August 02. Email/site address update part completed on August 18. Rest of file revamp not completed yet. 10/31/01: Updated Aaron Wornom's email address. Replaced LordNews Issue Links section. No other changes made. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- This web page accessed [Access Counter] times since May 02, 2001.
